The Luluabourg Mutiny was a major revolt by the garrison of the Congo Free State post at Luluabourg in 1895. Dissident African non-commissioned officers led the soldiers against the colonial commandant, whose abusive rule was cited as the immediate cause. The rebels killed the commandant and controlled most of Kasai province for more than six months before loyalist troops defeated them. A later field-army revolt followed in 1897, and some elements of the wider mutiny continued fighting until 1908.

Le récit

A military revolt in the Congo Free State

The Luluabourg Mutiny occurred when the entire garrison of the Congo Free State post revolted in 1895. The soldiers were African levies serving within the colonial military structure, yet they were not insulated from the abuses imposed by European officers. Low wages, harsh punishment, and arbitrary command were presented as recurring causes of discontent among colonial troops.

Dissident non-commissioned officers directed the uprising. In retaliation for the commandant’s abusive rule, the soldiers killed him and seized control of the post. The revolt expanded beyond Luluabourg: for more than six months, the rebels controlled most of Kasai province, turning a garrison mutiny into a substantial challenge to colonial authority.

Loyalist troops eventually defeated the rebels, but the settlement did not eliminate military opposition. Two years later, most of the Congo Free State’s field army revolted, and elements associated with the earlier mutiny continued fighting until 1908. The episode therefore illustrates how colonial coercion could also destabilize the African forces recruited to enforce it.
