A prolonged series of conflicts among pastoral Maasai and Iloikop groups that reshaped power, settlement, and population distribution across the northern plateaux. By 1884, pastoral groups had gained pre-eminence, while Iloikop communities were scattered across the Kilimanjaro, Taveta, Pare, Shambaa, Arusha, and southern Maasai Steppe regions. Subsequent epidemics further weakened Maasai political and military power.

Le récit

The final series of Maasai wars centred on the northern plateaux and brought several pastoral and semi-agricultural groups into shifting alliances. The Purko and Kisongo pastoral groups aligned with Laikipia and other Iloikop communities, many of whom had been pushed from favourable grazing lands. These coalitions reflected competing strategies of pastoral mobility, territorial control, and adaptation to the changing distribution of pasture.

By 1884, pastoral groups had achieved pre-eminence, while Iloikop groups had been scattered in many directions. Survivors moved from the Kilimanjaro lowlands to Taveta, through the Pare and Shambaa plains in the Pangani valley, and from Arusha toward the southern Maasai Steppe and the coast. Groups dispersed farther north and west were absorbed by neighbouring communities.

The pastoral Maasai victory was limited. Their occupied territory contracted, and they no longer inhabited the regions east of Mount Kilimanjaro or the Uasin Gishu and Laikipia plateaux. Much of the Rift Valley remained under their control, but with a greatly reduced population. Cholera in 1869, followed in the 1880s by smallpox and pleuro-pneumonia, severely affected people and herds, weakening Maasai power before the imposition of colonial rule.
