Mahmud was the king of Mali who attempted to restore the kingdom’s influence by attacking Jenne in 1599. He sought support from former vassals and local chiefs, but most refused to join him. After Moroccan forces entered the besieged town and Jenne’s governor launched a surprise attack, Mahmud was defeated and fled on horseback.

Mahmud appears in the account as a ruler attempting to reverse Mali’s political contraction on the Middle Niger. In 1599 he prepared an attack on Jenne and appealed to local chiefs who had once been connected to Mali as vassals. His strategy depended on reviving older relationships rather than commanding an intact imperial structure.
The response exposed the weakness of his position. Sanqara-Zūmaʿ and Faran-Sara, formerly commanders of Mali’s territorial army, would not join the expedition, while almost all chiefs in Kala and Binduku ignored his invitation. The chiefs of Oma and Fadaku or Faraku were among the few who supported him; Hamadi Amina of Massina later joined the coalition after conflict with the Moroccan authorities.
Mahmud’s army was defeated at Jenne at the end of April 1599. He escaped on horseback and was overtaken by the Kala-Shāʿa and another local chief, who nevertheless treated him with the respect accorded to a great king. His defeat is presented as a decisive sign of Mali’s decline on the Middle Niger.
