Le récit

A theology of Xhosa sovereignty

Makana was a militant Xhosa prophet whose teachings offered a systematic religious foundation for resistance. Rather than representing incoherent or incompatible beliefs, his doctrine combined Khoisan, Xhosa, and Christian elements into a creative theological synthesis. The result was an intellectual and symbolic programme that sought to explain the conflict between black and white moral worlds.

Makana distinguished between the divinities and destinies of the Xhosa and the whites. Dali’dephu, described as the great ancestor of the Xhosa, had made Uthixo the god of the white men; Uthixo was therefore inferior to Dali’dephu. The whites were likewise presented as morally inferior because they were troubled by sin, while the Xhosa possessed their own superior and particular way of life.

His message became politically charged when the two moral universes came into contact and conflict. Makana appealed for pan-Xhosa unity and confidence in the Xhosa moral universe, promising that Dali’dephu would sweep away the whites, that the Xhosa dead would return, and that a new era would begin. His teaching retained force until 1890, when Xhosa national resistance finally collapsed.
