Mamari Kulibali, also known as Biton or Tiguiton, was a Bambara military and political leader who consolidated the Kingdom of Segu in the early eighteenth century. He built power through a ton association and ton-dyon forces, defeated Kong and the Massasi, expanded into Macina and Jenne, and compelled Timbuktu's pashas to pay tribute.

Le récit
Mamari Kulibali rose from the Bambara political world of the Niger Bend and became the leader of a ton, an association of boys circumcised at the same time. This position gave him the name Biton, or Tiguiton, and enabled him to become a social and political leader outside the established gerontocratic and religious institutions. His authority rested on organization, military success, and the ability to mobilize followers.
Biton confronted external and internal rivals soon after his rise. He repelled an intervention from Kong with help from the Macina Fulbe and defeated a second Kong attack with the aid of Tyero Somono forces, who used swarms of bees against Kong cavalry. When Fulakoro of the Massasi appealed for help from besieged Mourdia, Mamari intervened, defeated him, and took him prisoner, driving the Massasi westward.
His subsequent conquests brought the whole of Bambara territory, including Beledugu, under his authority, while Macina and Jenne were also subordinated to Segu. He had palaces built by a Jenne architect and, in 1751, conquered Niani, the capital of declining Mali, whose ruler Massa Maghan Keita paid tribute. His fleet and cavalry cleared the Niger Bend of Tuareg exactions, after which the pashas of Timbuktu likewise paid tribute.
