Manding-sila was a route leading north and then north-west from Niani to Niagassola and the country regarded as the cradle of the Malinke. It was one of the northern routes that made Niani a major crossroads within the political and commercial geography of Mali.

Manding-sila led north from Niani before turning north-west. The route reached Niagassola and the country regarded in the source as the cradle of the Malinke. Its name, “the Manding route,” tied the road directly to the historical homeland associated with Malinke identity.
Together with Sedekule-sila, Manding-sila formed one of Niani’s principal northern connections. These routes helped explain why the capital was described as an important crossroads rather than an isolated inland settlement. They connected the Sankarani region with the Sahel and with the Malinke country farther north-west.
The area near the northern routes contained traces of an extensive suburb, possibly an “Arab village” or Muslim quarter, as well as a cemetery that may fit Ibn Battuta’s description. These remains suggest that the route corridor supported movement, settlement, and contact between different communities.
