Mauretania Tingitana was the western Roman province created from the kingdom of Mauretania under Claudius at the end of 42 CE. Separated from Mauretania Caesariensis by the Mulucha, it was governed directly by the emperor through an equestrian procurator probably based at Volubilis. The province remained connected to the military history of the western frontier and, according to the excerpt, lost territories south of the Oued Loukkos under Diocletian while maintaining maritime relations with coastal towns.

Le récit

Mauretania Tingitana formed the western half of the Roman reorganization of Mauretania under Claudius. The province was separated from Mauretania Caesariensis by the Mulucha, or Moulouya, and came under direct imperial authority. Its administration combined provincial government with the command of auxiliary troops, reflecting the continuing military demands of the western frontier.

The equestrian procurator probably resided at Volubilis. From there, the governor exercised civil and military powers over a province whose interior remained closely tied to relations with indigenous communities and to the wider Roman frontier system. Mauretania Tingitana also served as a reservoir of manpower for Roman forces confronting resistance elsewhere in North Africa.

The province underwent a major contraction under Diocletian. The excerpt states that Rome evacuated all territories south of the Oued Loukkos in 285, although it appears to have maintained maritime relations with coastal towns. The extent of any further withdrawal from the western part of Mauretania Caesariensis remained uncertain, making the late Roman geography of the region a matter of continuing debate.
