Mazrui resistance opposed the British takeover of the Kenya coast and interference in the internal affairs of coastal societies. Led by Mbaruk bin Rashid, it used hit-and-run warfare against the Imperial British East Africa Company and required Indian reinforcements for its defeat. The conflict intensified after the company selected another local ally to succeed the deceased Wali of Takarungu, bypassing Mbaruk, who had a stronger claim but opposed British presence. Mbaruk later fled to Tanganyika and was captured by the Germans.

Le récit

Resistance on the Kenya coast

The Mazrui family had established itself at Takarungu on the Kenya coast and gradually extended its influence across several coastal areas. It acquired a monopoly over the purchase of grain from the Mijikenda, thereby gaining control over the sale of food crops along the coast. This regional economic position was connected to the family’s political authority and shaped its opposition to British intervention.

British expansion disrupted the arrangements between the Mazrui and neighbouring coastal communities. The passage links resistance to interference in Mazrui internal organization and to the appointment of a British local ally after the death of the Wali of Takarungu in 1895. Mbaruk bin Rashid possessed a stronger claim to succession but was known for opposing the British presence, prompting him to seek the removal of British influence by force.

Mbaruk organized hit-and-run warfare against the better-armed British forces. Indian troops brought in as reinforcements were required to defeat the resistance in 1899. Mbaruk escaped to Tanganyika but subsequently fell into German hands, while the wider Mazrui resistance demonstrated that colonial authority on the coast faced opposition rooted in political sovereignty, economic interests, and local institutional autonomy.
