Middle Stone Age settlement in Namibia is presented as sparse and closely tied to the escarpment zone, where the few dependable water sources supported human occupation. Communities hunted animals including mountain zebra, and their low population density may reflect the severe constraints imposed by desert conditions. In this regional setting, Namibian groups appear to have occupied the outer limits of human adaptation to aridity in southern Africa.
The stone-tool record includes large numbers of blades and points, some displaying bifacial working that reveals considerable technical skill. Secondary working, or retouch, was relatively uncommon, while composite hafted tools were also rare. Raw materials included fine-grained quartzite, crypto-crystalline materials, silcrete and chert; some were transported over considerable distances, indicating movements or connections beyond the immediate locality.
The chronology of the Early Stone Age remains poorly resolved across southern Africa, making direct comparison between assemblages difficult. Technological similarities nevertheless provide a broad regional sequence, and newer dating work confirms that the Namibian evidence broadly follows the wider southern African pattern.
