Muhammad Rumfa was a ruler of Kano whose reign marked a major stage in the consolidation of Islam in Hausaland. A Wangara chronicle places the arrival of Wangara Muslims in Kano during his reign, while Muslim Fulbe had already reached the region under his immediate predecessor. Rumfa also sought guidance from Muhammad al-Maghili, who wrote the Obligations of Princes as a manual for Muslim rulers.

Le récit

A Kano ruler and Islamic reform

Muhammad Rumfa ruled Kano during the second half of the fifteenth century, a period when Islamic traditions were becoming more firmly established in Hausaland. The chronology of Wangara migration is disputed, but one important chronicle explicitly places the missionaries’ arrival during Rumfa’s reign. This association reflects Kano’s growing role as a center of Islamic commerce and learning.

Rumfa’s immediate predecessor is linked to the arrival of Muslim Fulbe from Melle, who brought books on divinity and etymology. These works broadened the intellectual repertoire of Hausa Muslims, who had previously possessed books on law and traditions. The circulation of texts helped connect Kano’s court and religious communities with wider currents of Muslim scholarship.

Rumfa requested advice from Muhammad al-Maghili, a prominent Muslim reformer. In response, al-Maghili wrote the Obligations of Princes, a guide to the conduct of Muslim rulers. The episode shows the effort to align Hausa kingship with Islamic political ideals, even though Islam remained unevenly accepted beyond traders, clerics, and court circles.
