Mūsa Tunkara appears in the history of Mema as its ruler during the early thirteenth century. At that time, Mema was one of the smaller Soninke states but had enough political and military capacity to influence the larger struggle between Soso and the Malinke forces led by Sundjata.
While Sundjata was in exile, he is said to have stayed for some time with Mūsa Tunkara. The ruler of Mema provided troops, including cavalry, for Sundjata’s campaign against Soso. This assistance connected Mema directly to the political and military formation of the Mali Empire.
