Nandi resistance was a sustained military opposition to British imperial expansion and railway construction in Kenya. Organized through territorial units called pororiet and led by an orgoiyot, Nandi warriors defended their territory with unusual cohesion. The resistance began in the 1890s and continued for more than seven years until the Nandi leader was murdered by British commanders in 1905 during supposedly arranged negotiations. His death weakened resistance and enabled British occupation of Nandi territory.

Le récit

Territorial cohesion and military resistance

The Nandi opposed British imperial expansion in Kenya, particularly the construction of a railway through their territory. The passage characterizes them as offering the strongest and longest military resistance among the peoples of Kenya. Their campaign began in the 1890s and continued for more than seven years, making it a major obstacle to British occupation.

Nandi society organized defence through territorial units known as pororiet. Warriors from each unit were responsible for defending their territory and slept in a common hut, described as the closest equivalent to a standing army. These territorial forces came together under an orgoiyot, a traditional leader who decided when the army would undertake a raid and was connected to territorial councils through personal representatives.

The social structure of Nandi society helped sustain resistance. Because territory, rather than clan, formed the centre of social life, clan rivalry was absent and the community achieved a high degree of cohesion. The campaign ended only after the Nandi leader was murdered by British commanders in 1905 while travelling to negotiations that had been treacherously arranged; this weakened the resistance and led eventually to British occupation.
