Omdurman is Sudan’s largest city and one half of the metropolitan twin-city core formed with Khartoum. Established in 1884 as a military headquarters, it expanded rapidly as an unplanned settlement of adobe houses and later developed into a major commercial center. The city is also associated with the Islamic University of Omdurman, founded in 1912.

Omdurman forms part of the metropolitan core of Sudan together with Khartoum. Although Khartoum is the national capital, Omdurman is described as the country’s largest city, with an estimated population of approximately three million. Its urban importance is therefore demographic as well as commercial and cultural.
The city was originally established in 1884 as a military headquarters. It grew quickly as an unplanned town whose buildings were largely made from adobe, reflecting the materials and settlement conditions of the period. Over time, Omdurman moved beyond its military origins and became a major commercial center within the wider capital region.
Omdurman also developed an important educational institution. The Islamic University of Omdurman was founded in 1912 and is described as widely known and respected. Together with its commercial role and demographic weight, this institution gives the city a prominent place in Sudan’s urban and cultural landscape.
