The 1567 Portuguese military expedition was an attempt to impose Portuguese hegemony over the Kingdom of Muenemutapa and secure direct control of its gold mines after efforts to convert the ruling aristocracy to Christianity failed. Portuguese forces encountered stiff resistance and debilitating disease and were compelled to retreat. The failed campaign became an early episode in the longer history of Mozambican resistance to Portuguese rule.

Le récit

A failed attempt to seize Muenemutapa

Portugal launched the expedition in 1567 after its initial strategy of converting the Muenemutapa ruling aristocracy to Christianity failed. The campaign formed part of a broader attempt to establish Portuguese hegemony over the kingdom and obtain direct control over its gold mines. It represented a shift from religious and diplomatic pressure toward open military intervention.

The Portuguese forces entered a political environment in which Muenemutapa’s authority was reinforced by aristocratic control of gold production, agricultural resources, religious institutions, and international trade. The expedition therefore confronted not only a military opponent but also a state whose economic and ideological foundations supported resistance to external domination.

The campaign ended unsuccessfully. Portuguese troops faced stiff resistance and debilitating diseases and were compelled to retreat. The defeat marked the beginning of what the extract characterizes as a long tradition of Mozambican resistance to Portuguese rule, even though Lisbon continued its expansionist policy through diplomacy, intrigue, conversion efforts, and later threats of invasion.
