Le récit

Quelimane is a coastal port town situated just north of the Zambezi River. Its location made it a maritime outlet for the lower Zambezi region and connected the town to coastal and inland commercial networks.

In the nineteenth century, Quelimane became a major slave-exporting entrepôt. This role placed the town within the commercial infrastructure of the slave trade and made its harbor significant to the movement of enslaved people from the region toward external markets.

Quelimane’s history illustrates how coastal towns could become powerful commercial intermediaries. Its port combined geographical access to the Zambezi basin with participation in a violent export economy that shaped nineteenth-century Mozambique.
