Le récit

A major urban center of Fezzan

Sabha appears among the large cities of medieval Fezzan and is identified with the present capital of the region. Its prominence was expressed through a substantial religious building and an active commercial quarter. The city therefore provides evidence for the urban and economic organization of Fezzan beyond the probable capital at Djarma.

The city possessed a cathedral mosque, a building that marked its importance within the Islamic urban landscape. It also contained several bazaars, spaces that supported exchange and linked Sabha to the wider networks crossing the central Sahara. The passage does not detail the goods traded or the communities operating these markets.

Sabha was known by different names in different traditions. Al-Bakri used the form Sabha, modern maps designate it as Sabhah, and Ibadi chronicles called it Shabaha. These variants belong to the same historical identification and demonstrate the importance of comparing Arabic geographical writing with local chronicle traditions.
