Sennar was the capital of the Old Fundj Sultanate and a major political center in the eastern Sudan. Its ruler had become largely a figurehead by 1820, yet the sultan remained the country’s legal sovereign until the Turco-Egyptian invasion. Sennar later became one of the sites of resistance to Turkiyya, including the 1844 revolt involving Sudanese soldiers.

By 1820, the sultan of Sennar had been reduced to a figurehead, reflecting the political weakening and fragmentation of the Fundj order. Despite this decline, the sultan retained legal sovereignty over the country until the invasion carried out in the name of the Ottoman sultan.
