The Sierra Leone Railway was the first railway constructed in British West Africa, beginning in the 1890s. Its first train operated in the colony in 1897, and by 1909 the main line had reached Pendembu in the east after crossing the palm-oil belt. A branch from Bubuyan to Makeni in the north opened in 1915. The railway primarily served the evacuation of exports rather than broad territorial integration.

Construction of the first railway in British West Africa began in Sierra Leone during the 1890s. The first train operated in the colony in 1897, marking the creation of a modern transport corridor under colonial administration. As elsewhere in the British African territories, transport infrastructure was closely connected to the movement of export commodities.
By 1909, the main line had been completed across the rich palm-oil belt to Pendembu in eastern Sierra Leone. The line covered 365 kilometres and connected the interior production zone to the colonial transport system. A northern branch from Bubuyan to Makeni, measuring 132 kilometres, opened in 1915.
The railway helped lower freight rates and replace human porterage with mechanical transport. Yet its principal function was the evacuation of exports, and the passage cautions against interpreting such infrastructure as a general opening of the continent. The route served limited areas and was designed around the needs of the colonial export economy.
