Soshangane was the Nguni leader who established the Gaza conquest state in southern Mozambique during the nineteenth century. He directed the migration of his followers into the Delagoa Bay region, defeated Zwangendaba in 1831, relocated the kingdom to the middle Sabi, and extended Gaza authority toward present-day Zimbabwe and the Zambezi valley. His rule depended on military organization, tribute, taxation, and Nguni-controlled age-regiments.

Soshangane emerged from the crisis that followed Shaka’s destruction of the Ndwandwe state. He was the first of Zwide’s generals to break away, taking a small following into Tsonga country near Delagoa Bay. There he defeated several neighboring groups and began assembling a new political order around his own leadership.
The kingdom he founded was called Gaza, while his followers in Mozambique became known as Shangana. Soshangane’s forces conducted expeditions in every direction, capturing young people, cattle, and grain. These operations supplied the state and extended his authority over communities that had previously maintained their own political structures.
Soshangane made control of trade a central element of Gaza power. From the region of Delagoa Bay, the kingdom dominated exchange between inland communities and Portuguese coastal settlements. The bay served as an outlet for ivory and other goods from Nyaka’s kingdom, the Thembe, and Maputo states, linking Gaza to wider commercial routes.
Soshangane ruled from Chaimaite on the middle Sabi, directing attacks against surrounding chiefdoms and eastern Shona states. Southern Mozambique, particularly Tsonga country, bore the brunt of these campaigns. In 1826, remnants of the Ndwandwe from northern Zululand joined his people, strengthening the Nguni element of the expanding kingdom.
Gaza stretched from the lower Zambezi to just south of the Limpopo. Its army used age-regiments and military techniques associated with the Zulu state. The original southern Nguni followers formed a socially superior ba-Nguni group, while incorporated communities were called ba-Tshangane and served in separate regiments under ba-Nguni officers.
