The South West Africa Territorial Force (SWATF) was established in 1980 as the local military arm of the South African Defence Force in Namibia. It formed part of South Africa’s broader militarisation and counter-insurgency strategy during the war against SWAPO and PLAN. The force recruited Namibians and operated alongside other locally organised security units.

In 1980, the South West Africa Territorial Force was created as the local arm of the South African Defence Force. Its formation reflected the growing militarisation of Namibia, where South Africa maintained a large military presence while attempting to control the territory during the liberation war. The force was followed in 1981 by the South West Africa Police.
The state also introduced compulsory military service for Namibian males over sixteen living outside the northern war zone, regardless of race. Local battalions were established in different regions, including the 1 Ovambo Battalion, commonly known as 101 Battalion, and 201 Battalion in the Caprivi. These units relied on local knowledge, tracking skills and regional recruitment.
By 1988, the forces employed 9,277 people across northern Namibia, representing 34 per cent of formal employment there. Military service could therefore function not only as coercion but also as a survival strategy, particularly during the severe drought of 1980–81, when pastoralists used military wages to rebuild devastated herds.
