Le récit

A prolonged struggle over southern Sudan

The source dates the beginning of civil war in southern Sudan to 1962, when the Anya Nya movement led the conflict against the central government. The war reflected the deep political, regional, religious, and cultural divisions separating northern and southern Sudan. It also imposed a major social and economic burden on the country.

In 1972, the Addis Ababa peace agreement brought a temporary settlement and made the south a self-governing region. The conflict broke out again in 1983, this time involving government forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, led by John Garang. The renewed war lasted for much of the following two decades.

Talks in Kenya produced the Machakos Protocol in 2002, which allowed the south to seek self-determination after six years. The government and southern rebels signed a broader peace deal in 2005, establishing a permanent ceasefire, agreements on wealth and power sharing, and an autonomous southern government. The settlement brought relative calm but did not erase the underlying divide.
