The Sudanese Twenty-fifth Dynasty was a Kushite ruling house that conquered Egypt from a southern base near the Fourth Cataract. Its founder, Piankhi, ruled territory between the First and Sixth Cataracts and challenged Egyptian rulers during a period of political division. The dynasty maintained control for about sixty years before repeated Assyrian campaigns ended its authority in Egypt.

Le récit
The Twenty-fifth Dynasty emerged from a powerful Sudanese kingdom based south of Egypt. Its ruler Piankhi governed territory extending between the First and Sixth Cataracts and possessed sufficient power to challenge the Egyptian throne. The dynasty’s rise followed the fragmentation of Egypt into competing petty kingdoms and the growing pressure exerted by Assyria from the northeast.
Piankhi intervened when Tefnakht of Sais unified the Delta, occupied Memphis, and besieged Heracleopolis. The ruler of Hermopolis had joined Tefnakht, creating the immediate conditions for a southern army to advance into Egypt. Piankhi’s conduct in warfare is portrayed through his ritual discipline, treatment of defeated princes, avoidance of captured princesses, and particular attachment to horses.
The dynasty lasted approximately sixty years. Its authority was eventually broken by the Assyrians after numerous campaigns, although the excerpt presents the Kushite invasion as a major southern intervention that temporarily placed Egypt under Sudanese rule.
