The TANZAM Railway was a major regional transport project linking Zambia’s Copperbelt with Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Built with Chinese capital, technical expertise, capital goods, and skilled labour, it embodied the aspirations of postcolonial African economic cooperation. By 1978, however, efficient operation required renewed Chinese aid, revealing the financial and institutional difficulties confronting ambitious regional development schemes.

Le récit

A Regional Economic Link

The TANZAM Railway connected the Zambian Copperbelt with Dar es Salaam, giving a landlocked mining region a direct route toward an Indian Ocean port. Its purpose fitted wider postcolonial ambitions to overcome colonial transport patterns, which had generally linked African hinterlands to the nearest port for the shipment of primary commodities. The railway therefore stood both as infrastructure and as an expression of regional economic cooperation.

Construction depended heavily on China. Chinese assistance supplied capital, technical expertise, capital goods, and even skilled labour, demonstrating the importance of external partnerships in the realization of large African development projects. The railway’s construction also reflected Tanzania’s search for national economic and social transformation after the decline of hopes for East African political unity.

The project’s difficulties became clear by 1978, when Chinese aid was needed to restore efficient operation. This dependence complicated the railway’s symbolism: it was intended to strengthen African economic autonomy and regional exchange, yet its continued effectiveness required substantial outside support. The TANZAM Railway thus illustrates both the practical value and the structural constraints of postcolonial economic integration.
