Le récit

Cult Leadership and Armed Resistance

In 1909, the Tonga priest Maluma transformed religious authority into an explicit call for political action in Nyasaland. He demanded the immediate removal of colonial overlords and framed resistance as a collective struggle against white rule. His appeal presented African unity and armed action as necessary responses to foreign domination.

Maluma did not remain solely a prophetic or ritual figure. He subsequently led the Tonga into battle, linking spiritual legitimacy with military organization. This combination reflected an older role of cult priests and spirit mediums as guardians of homelands, now redirected against the colonial order.

The movement belongs to a wider pattern in which religious authorities organized and sanctified insurrections across Central and Southern Africa. Their influence helped mobilize public support, particularly where conventional rulers had been removed, subordinated, or compromised by colonial arrangements. The Tonga case therefore illustrates the political force of religious institutions during early colonial resistance.
