The Treaty of Thaba Bosiu was a 1866 settlement imposed on Moshoeshoe during the war between Lesotho and the Orange Free State. It transferred substantial arable territory to the Boer republic, although Moshoeshoe used the agreement to gain time for reorganizing his people before renewed conflict in 1867.

The Treaty of Thaba Bosiu was concluded in 1866 during the escalating conflict between the Orange Free State and Moshoeshoe’s Sotho kingdom. By this point the balance of power had shifted toward the Free State, whose population and agricultural economy had grown while Moshoeshoe faced declining authority and succession tensions among his sons.
The settlement followed military pressure and political division within Lesotho. Molapo, Moshoeshoe’s son and governor of the northern part of the country, made a separate peace with the Boers. This lack of unity forced Moshoeshoe to accept a treaty under which the Orange Free State obtained a considerable portion of Lesotho’s arable lands.
The agreement did not end the conflict. Moshoeshoe treated it as an opportunity to reorganize his people, and war broke out again in 1867. The renewed struggle continued until Britain intervened, ultimately annexing Lesotho as a Crown Colony on 12 March 1868.
