Le récit

A postwar political settlement in western Libya

The Tripolitanian Republic emerged from the collapse of Italian authority in western Libya after a series of Libyan military successes. It was established on 16 November 1918, alongside the Emirate of Cyrenaica in eastern Libya. These developments transformed armed resistance into an attempt to create recognized Libyan institutions.

Italy recognized the republic in 1919 and granted it its own parliament. Further rights followed under the Treaty of al-Radjma in 1920, indicating a temporary accommodation between Italian authority and Libyan political structures. The arrangement nevertheless remained dependent on the balance of power created by resistance and Italian weakness.

In January 1922, the Tripolitanian Republic and the Emirate of Cyrenaica agreed to form a political union. Idris al-Sanusi, leader of the Sanusiyya, was elected head of the union, while a central committee was established at Gharyan.
