The Tuareg entered Hausaland through Azbin in the late fourteenth century and soon came into conflict with the Hausa of Gobir. They later displaced the Hausa ruler from the Azbin area and established a sultanate at Agades in 1495. The Tuareg entered Hausaland through Azbin in the late fourteenth century, bringing them into direct conflict with the Hausa people of Gobir. Their movement formed part of the wider circulation of pastoral communities across the central Sudan. Unlike a territorial conquest aimed at dense settlement, Tuareg activity remained strongly connected to grazing, exchange, and mobility.
The Tuareg later dislodged the Hausa ruler of Gobir from the Azbin area and established their own sultanate in Agades in 1495. This development gave the Tuareg a durable political base near an important northern corridor. As pastoralists, the Tuareg were not primarily interested in territorial occupation and permanent settlement.
