Tuman Bay was the final Mamluk sultan, elected in Cairo after Qansawh al-Ghawri’s defeat and death at Marj Dabiq in 1516. He rejected Selim I’s offer of the Egyptian viceroyalty under Ottoman suzerainty and attempted to continue resistance in Egypt. After the final defeat near Cairo on 23 January 1517, he was betrayed and hanged at one of the city’s main gates.

Le récit

Tuman Bay assumed the sultanate in Cairo after the Mamluk defeat at Marj Dabiq and the death of Qansawh al-Ghawri. His accession came at a moment when Ottoman forces had already occupied Syria and were advancing toward Egypt. The political options available to him were therefore shaped by the rapid collapse of Mamluk power.

Selim I offered Tuman Bay the viceroyalty of Egypt if he would recognize Ottoman suzerainty. Tuman Bay was willing to consider the arrangement, but his amirs compelled him to refuse. He consequently chose to continue the struggle against the Ottoman army rather than accept subordinate rule under the new imperial power.

The Ottoman army defeated the Mamluks near Cairo on 23 January 1517. Tuman Bay fled into the countryside and hoped to rally a resistance movement, but he was soon betrayed. His capture and hanging at one of Cairo’s principal gates symbolized the definitive destruction of the Mamluk political order in Egypt.
