The African National Congress (ANC) is the South African political organization that led the principal organized struggle against apartheid. Established in 1912, it became the main arena for negotiations between the apartheid government and Black political interests in the early 1990s. After winning the first democratic election in 1994, the ANC formed the national government under Nelson Mandela and later Thabo Mbeki. Its political dominance was closely associated with the defeat of apartheid, although it faced continuing pressure over poverty and development.

Le récit

From resistance organization to governing party

The African National Congress was established in 1912 to fight for the rights of Black South Africans. Over time, it became the principal organization opposing apartheid and the political home of Nelson Mandela and much of the country’s post-apartheid leadership. Its history combined mass politics, negotiation, repression, and the personal sacrifices of leaders who were imprisoned or forced to operate under severe restrictions.

During the early 1990s, the ANC participated in most negotiations between the apartheid government and Black interests. The organization had been banned and was not permitted to operate within South Africa from 1964 to 1990, while the state carried out attacks and assassinations against some of its leaders. These conditions contributed to the ANC’s symbolic authority among many South Africans and reinforced its identity as the movement that had carried the anti-apartheid struggle into national politics.

The ANC won more than 60 percent of the vote in the first free and open election of 1994. Nelson Mandela, then its head, became president; in the 1999 election, the party repeated its electoral success and Thabo Mbeki became president. The ANC retained broad electoral loyalty, but governing exposed it to new demands: reducing poverty, creating jobs, improving services, and producing economic results beyond the moral authority of its liberation history.
