Le récit

Leadership of Umkhonto we Sizwe

Nelson Mandela appears in the account as the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the underground organisation formed in 1961 after the banning of the African congresses. He had previously been a Transvaal leader of the African National Congress. His role connected the ANC’s political leadership with the new strategy of organised resistance.

Under Mandela’s leadership, Umkhonto we Sizwe aimed to bring about political change through selective sabotage against specific installations and buildings. The organisation’s activity marked a transition from open political mobilisation toward clandestine action in response to the restrictions imposed by apartheid authorities.

The underground campaign produced more than 200 acts of sabotage or attempted sabotage between December 1961 and the end of 1964. The security police eventually captured the Umkhonto high command at Rivonia outside Johannesburg in 1963, placing Mandela’s leadership within a wider cycle of surveillance, arrests, and political trials.
