Le récit

Reunifying Imerina

Andrianampoinimerina rose from the political fragmentation of central Imerina. Around 1780, several small kingdoms were divided by civil wars; around 1785, Ramboasalama, the nephew of the king of Ambohimanga, expelled his uncle and proclaimed himself king under the name Andrianampoinimerina. He then combined diplomacy and military action to consolidate his authority.

In 1791 or 1792, Andrianampoinimerina moved his capital to Antananarivo and began constructing the political and social organization of a new kingdom. He subdued or brought neighboring groups under Merina suzerainty, including the Bezanozano and Sihanaka, while extending influence southward over territories associated with the Betsileo and toward Ankaratra and Faratsiho.

His western ambitions encountered the powerful Sakalava kingdoms of Menabe and Boina and the resistance of Ambongo. Although he sometimes established friendly relations with the Sakalava, he never completely subdued them. By his death in 1810, however, he had made Imerina a force capable of influencing political developments throughout Madagascar.
