Antananarivo became the capital of Imerina under Andrianampoinimerina in 1791 or 1792 and served as the political center from which Merina rulers expanded their authority across Madagascar. By 1880, the government based in the city controlled more than two-thirds of the island despite local rebellions. The city was therefore the institutional heart of nineteenth-century Merina state formation.

Antananarivo rose to central importance when Andrianampoinimerina moved his capital there in 1791 or 1792. From the city, he began constructing the political and social structures of the new Merina kingdom after reunifying the fragmented polities of Imerina. It remained the capital of both Imerina and Madagascar in the historical development described here.
The city’s importance derived from its position as the center of a monarchy that sought to extend authority beyond the central plateau.
