The Bloemfontein Convention was concluded on 23 February 1854 and granted the Boer communities of the Orange River Sovereignty complete independence. Britain renounced its alliances with African rulers north of the Orange River, with the exception of Adam Kok’s treaty, which was later altered to facilitate white purchase of his lands. The convention’s settlement left the boundary with Moshoeshoe’s kingdom unresolved and helped open the way for territorial conflict between Boers and Sotho communities.

Britain renounced its alliances with African rulers north of the Orange River except Adam Kok. Even that treaty was later amended so that white settlers could purchase all of Kok’s lands. Clerk also refused to negotiate the boundary between the new Boer state and Moshoeshoe’s kingdom, leaving unresolved territorial tensions that later contributed to clashes between the Boers and the Sotho.
