The 1878 British annexation of Walvis Bay and adjacent territory, carried out during the Cape Colony’s intervention in Namibia. It was the only territorial annexation achieved by William Coates Palgrave’s mission, whose broader aim of establishing a British sphere of influence inland remained incomplete.

Walvis Bay formed the clearest territorial result of the Cape Colony’s intervention in Namibia. After Herero leaders requested British protection in 1874 and the Cape Legislative Assembly voted for annexation in 1875, the port and surrounding territory were annexed for Britain in 1878.
The annexation did not extend Palgrave’s influence into a comprehensive British takeover of central and southern Namibia. His missions aimed to protect Cape strategic interests, strengthen trade links and recruit labour, but the British government remained cautious about wider imperial commitments.
Walvis Bay therefore stood apart from the uncertain protection arrangements negotiated with African leaders. Inland agreements depended on divergent understandings of land, authority and defence, while the coastal annexation provided a more concrete expression of British presence.
