Bunyoro was a major Great Lakes kingdom whose regional influence revived during the second half of the nineteenth century. Its political resurgence was especially associated with the long reign of Mukama Kabarega, who ruled from about 1870 until his removal by imperial forces in 1899. Bunyoro competed with Buganda and Toro for tribute, productive lands, and salt resources, while its claims contributed to conflict across western Uganda and the wider Lakes Plateau.

Bunyoro was one of the principal political formations of the Great Lakes region. Although its nineteenth-century pattern of long reigns was less consistent than those of Buganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, the kingdom experienced a marked revival in the second half of the century. Its renewed power and regional influence made it one of the states that most strongly shaped the political economy of western Uganda.
The revival was closely associated with Mukama Kabarega, whose long reign lasted from about 1870 until his removal by imperial agency in 1899. Extended rule gave Bunyoro’s court time to consolidate authority and mobilize resources. The kingdom’s resurgence formed part of the broader nineteenth-century movement toward stronger central control, larger domains, and more systematic extraction.
Bunyoro competed with Toro for tribute from the saltworks of southwestern present-day Uganda. It also contested the productive areas of Bugerere and Budiope with Buganda, seeking grain, tubers, cattle, bananas, and manufactures. These overlapping claims turned productive zones into arenas of conflict and helped sustain the wider rivalry between Bunyoro and Buganda.
Bunyoro’s power rested on more than military claims. The kingdom’s courts were connected to systems of production, tribute, exchange, and provisioning that reached beyond their core territories. The struggle for salt, food, livestock, and manufactured goods shows how political revival depended on controlling the resources and routes that linked producers to royal centres.
