Kabarega was king of Bunyoro and a principal opponent of British expansion in Uganda between 1891 and 1899. After military defeats and unsuccessful attempts to negotiate with Frederick Lugard, he continued resistance through guerrilla warfare from Lango country. Captured in 1899 alongside Mwanga, he was taken into exile, and the extract identifies 1923 as his death year.

Le récit

Resistance from Bunyoro

Kabarega, king of Bunyoro, confronted British agents during the expansion of colonial authority in Uganda. Between 1891 and 1899, his forces clashed repeatedly with those of Frederick Lugard and other British representatives. Although some encounters ended in defeat, Kabarega did not abandon political resistance and twice attempted to reach terms with Lugard.

When diplomacy failed, Kabarega withdrew from Bunyoro into Lango country in the north. From this neighboring region he repeatedly harassed British forces, using a form of guerrilla warfare that the extract describes as probably the first of its kind in East Africa. His strategy avoided conventional battles and relied on mobility, concealment, and attacks against occupying forces.

Kabarega was later joined in Lango by Mwanga, the Kabaka of Buganda. Their refuge was stormed in 1899, and both kings were captured and taken to Kisimayu. The episode brought together military confrontation and diplomatic initiative, while demonstrating the difficulty British forces faced in consolidating control over the inland kingdoms.

The extract identifies Kabarega as an exiled former king and gives 1923 as his death year. His career represents a sustained effort by a regional ruler to preserve political autonomy through both negotiation and armed resistance.
