The lake basins of East Africa, situated within the African Rift system, preserve evidence for changing rainfall, lake levels, vegetation, and human environments during the Pleistocene and Holocene. East Africa’s lake basins are presented as a principal area for studying proposed pluvial and interpluvial phases. Most lakes in the eastern branch of the Rift, apart from Lake Victoria, lack surface outlets and occupy relatively dry settings. By contrast, the major lakes of the western branch are filled to their overflow levels, creating different hydrological conditions within the same rift system.
Former shorelines and lake sediments indicate that rainfall and water levels changed repeatedly. The evidence must be treated cautiously because East Africa is highly seismoactive: tectonic displacement may have moved shorelines, modified overflow thresholds, or tilted entire basins. For this reason, the use of early and middle Pleistocene pluvial evidence was reduced, while better-preserved late Quaternary deposits received greater attention.
The region also links environmental history to archaeology. Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania preserves lower-Pleistocene fauna, climatic indications of high rainfall, and a stratigraphic sequence containing an extensive evolutionary series of handaxes. Around the Nakuru, Elmenteita, and Naivasha basins, high beaches and lacustrine deposits record wetter conditions, while later records from Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana show repeated Holocene fluctuations in water level and vegetation.
