The Gaza Nguni State was formed by Nguni immigrants who had fled upheavals in what is now South Africa and moved into southern Mozambique under the leadership of Soshangane. After 1828, they migrated north to the Save River and established a powerful state with its capital at Chaimate. Gaza forces conquered Tonga and Chopi chieftaincies, extended influence toward the Inhambane coast and the southern bank of the Zambesi, and forced prazeiro communities to recognize Soshangane’s nominal authority and pay tribute. Their expansion sharply weakened Portuguese influence in southern Mozambique.

Le récit

Nguni expansion in southern Mozambique

The Gaza Nguni entered southern Mozambique during the upheavals of the early nineteenth century. These immigrants had fled from the region now identified as South Africa and posed a serious challenge to Portugal’s already fragile hold over the Lourenço Marques–Delagoa Bay region. Their movement transformed the political balance of southern Mozambique and brought several local chieftaincies under new authority.

After 1828, Gaza forces under Soshangane migrated northward to the Save River. There they forged a powerful state and established its capital at Chaimate. Their military strength rested on short stabbing-spears and some European firearms, which enabled them to expand rapidly across territories occupied by Tonga and Chopi communities.

Gaza’s hegemony extended eastward to the Inhambane coast and virtually eliminated Portuguese influence in that zone. By 1840, Gaza forces had also reached the southern bank of the Zambesi River. The state’s expansion was therefore not limited to a local migration but created a broad political sphere linking southern coastal regions with the interior.

The Gaza Nguni also imposed authority on the prazeiro community. Prazeiros were compelled to recognize the nominal authority of Soshangane and his heirs and to pay annual tribute. This arrangement further eroded Lisbon’s claims in the region and demonstrated the ability of an African state to subordinate actors connected to the Portuguese colonial system.
