Monson Diarra was a ruler of Segu whose reign from 1792 to 1808 restored the kingdom's influence across much of the Niger Bend. He extended Segu's power from San to Timbuktu and from Dogon country to Kaarta, making the kingdom a dominant regional force before the subsequent troubles associated with the Fulbe and Tuareg.

Le récit

Segu's renewed regional power

Monson Diarra ruled Segu from 1792 to 1808, during a period when the kingdom was recovering from earlier succession crises. His reign followed the institutional restoration carried out by Ngolo Diarra and gave Segu a ruler capable of projecting authority well beyond its immediate core. The kingdom's influence once again became visible across the central western Sudan.

The geographical reach attributed to Monson was extensive. Segu's power was felt from San to Timbuktu and from Dogon country to Kaarta, a span that connected agricultural, commercial, and strategic zones along and beyond the Niger. This expansion placed Segu in continuing competition with Kaarta and with other regional forces operating around the Niger Bend.

Monson's death in 1808 was followed three years later by the death of Shaykh al-Mukhtār. The demise of these leaders contributed to a period of troubles in the Niger Bend, before the advent of Shaykhü Ahmadu. The passage therefore presents Monson's reign as the last major phase of Segu's pre-jihad-era political consolidation.
