Le récit

Restoring monarchy at Segu

Ngolo Diarra rose to power in 1766, when the Kingdom of Segu was emerging from a prolonged period of anarchy after Biton Kulibali's death. His political task was to end the agitation of ton-dyon chiefs who had become mercenaries and to rebuild a durable royal authority. His accession therefore marked a decisive transition from military factionalism toward a more centralized monarchy.

Ngolo abandoned Segu-Koro and established a new political center farther upstream at Segu-Si-Koro. He reinforced Bambara control over Macina and Timbuktu, where Arma civilian officials of Moroccan descent were placed under the supervision of Bambara war chiefs. His campaigns also reached the Fulbe chief Sua Makan Yero and extended into Dogon country.

Late in life, Ngolo undertook an expedition against Yatenga, but the campaign failed and he died during the return journey. Despite this unsuccessful expedition, his reign created a new dynasty at Segu and restored the kingdom as one of the principal powers of the Niger Bend.
