The Saitic Kingdom was Egypt’s Twenty-sixth Dynasty, founded by Psammetik after he ended Assyrian domination with assistance from Gyges of Lydia and Greek mercenaries. Its rulers sought to restore Egypt’s international position through commercial expansion, while Upper Egypt developed as a wealthy agricultural region supplying Lower Egypt. The dynasty ended when Persian forces conquered Egypt during the reign of Psammetik III.

Le récit

The Saitic Kingdom arose after Egypt broke free from Assyrian overlordship. Psammetik achieved this in 658 BCE with the support of Gyges of Lydia and Greek mercenaries, then established the Twenty-sixth Dynasty. The new regime attempted to recover the political and economic standing that Egypt had lost during earlier divisions and foreign pressures.

Commercial expansion was central to the dynasty’s policy. Upper Egypt became a prosperous agricultural zone, producing goods that Lower Egypt marketed and distributed. This relationship connected the southern agricultural regions with the Delta and helped restore Egypt’s position through trade rather than through the permanent occupation of Palestine.

The kingdom’s independence ended under Psammetik III, when Cambyses and the Persians conquered Egypt. Persian control inaugurated a new phase in which Egyptian sovereignty was subordinated to foreign kings.
