Le récit

War and political consolidation

Gold discovery in the Transvaal transformed the strategic importance of the region and contributed to a sequence of annexations and political confrontations. The Jameson Raid of 1896 formed part of this escalation. These developments culminated in the Second Boer War, which began in 1899 and involved the competing imperial and settler claims that had intensified around the mineral economy.

The conflict had consequences beyond the battlefield. In the account of South Africa’s economic transformation, the war ultimately resulted in the creation of the Union of South Africa in 1910. Political consolidation after the war helped establish the framework within which industrial development, economic self-sufficiency and racial labour regulation expanded.

The Union’s subsequent development remained profoundly unequal. Mining and manufacturing grew, but African access to land and skilled employment was restricted, while migrant labour supplied the mines and white-controlled farms. The war therefore stands in the narrative as a turning point linking mineral wealth, political unification and a more consolidated colonial order.
