The Union of South Africa was created in 1910 after the Second Boer War and united the principal British and Boer political units of southern Africa. In the economic narrative, unification helped stimulate white-led industrial development and a stronger drive toward economic self-sufficiency. The Union also inherited and consolidated a racial political order in which mining, agriculture and manufacturing expanded through unequal landholding, restricted African employment and migrant labour.

Le récit

A political union after war

The Union of South Africa was created in 1910 in the aftermath of the Second Boer War of 1899. Its formation brought together the four political units that had previously structured South African colonial society: Cape Colony, Natal, Transvaal and Orange Free State. The union marked the consolidation of a political order shaped by British imperial power, Boer settler interests and the economic importance of the mining regions.

The new political framework encouraged industrial development and a desire for greater economic self-sufficiency among the white population. Manufacturing expanded into fruit preserving, brewing, soap and candle making, engineering, footwear and clothing. During and after the First World War, protective tariffs and new public institutions further supported industrial growth and diversification beyond mining.

This development did not benefit South Africa’s African, Coloured and Indian populations equally. The Union’s economic growth rested on legislation that restricted African landholding, skilled employment, movement and urban residence. By the interwar period, African workers were concentrated in low-paid, often temporary employment in mines, industry and white-controlled agriculture, while racial segregation structured access to land and towns.
